The vast majority of civil matters are resolved by the Portuguese judicial courts, namely the civil, criminal, labour, commercial and family courts of law.
The administrative jurisdiction comprises the decisions on the legality of actions performed by public entities, as well as the disputes over tax decisions made by the national authorities.
The common courts decide matters of constitutional nature. However, these matters may progress to the Constitutional Court if unresolved. All the legal acts and relations performed under the Constitution must comply with its rules. Such matters include the violation of fundamental rights, as well as any other rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
